Young Adults Christian Groups

Recently some of us went to a rally where not far away people gathered with evil intent.  If they were permitted, they would have acted violently, and we could only imagine how far that would go.

But we were protected, in our case there were a sizable force of police who kept the groups apart, so that while we sensed the hostility that wasn’t far away, we felt in no danger.

I have been reminded how we are all invited to know that same security when we avail ourselves of the protection offered us that is far more powerful than the police that stood around us.  To know the certainty that Elisha knew:

“Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” (2 Kings 6:16)

Recently a number of people have shared with me just how precious the words of Psalm 91 have been to them, and how God is speaking to them and bringing comfort and strength through this passage:

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.” (Psalm 91:1 – 2)

I want to say at the outset, that I believe this is not a reason for carefree living as a believer, as much as it is a call to seek the Lord and His ways.  In one version I read, the word ‘dwells’ carries a reference to Exodus 15:26 which reads:

“If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”  (Exodus 15:26)

With these verses in mind, let me remind you of two things today.  Firstly – seek the Lord and put your trust in Him as you go about your day and make plans.  If you heed His voice, if you do what is right in His sight, if you remain obedient, which I remind you is an act of love, then the second thing is true.  And that is that you can know with certainty the comfort that comes from the truth of the words of Psalm 91.

So take some time today to read this Psalm – and let its truth wash over you and inspire you to a life of ‘dwelling in the secret place of the Most High.’  Then:

No evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; for He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. (Psalm 91:11)
