Last week we turned a corner. For the past six months the sun has been setting a little earlier, rising a little later, the days becoming short, the nights longer, and it’s cold. I’m not a great fan of this time of year, because I don’t like the cold, and the darkness and amount of time spent indoors takes its toll on me.

I needed something to pick me up, to help me feel better, something more than just the promise of more daylight and warmer temperatures. And I came upon this Psalm, it is one of the Psalms of Ascent, also called Pilgrim Songs, because they were traditionally sung as people travelled up the hill to Jerusalem, and up the steps to the temple to worship.

When the Lord brought back the captivity of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing. Then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.” The Lord has done great things for us, and we are glad. (Psalm 126:1 – 3)

Reading this Psalm invited me to remember moments when I was ‘like those who dream.’ Or, to put it another way, ‘when my dreams came true.’ When I wanted to laugh and sing and tell all the world about the good things that God had done for me.

Before I knew it, wonderful memories came flooding back of some of the ‘great things’ that The Lord has done, and immediately I was glad, my spirit lifted, and I was reminded that God loves me (as He does you) and He delights for us to be His witness to the nations, very simply by ascribing Greatness to our God, and by sharing the joy that comes from remembering and celebrating His goodness to us.

Today, here it is winter, and it is cold and my toes feel frozen, but I remember the summer; walking in shorts, t-shirts and sandals, even swimming in the ocean, and I know that the seasons will continue to turn. In the same way, I have known the Goodness of God, and I know the promise of His Word which reminds me:

Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!” (Lamentations 3:22 – 24)

So today I am determined to choose to be a witness to the nations, of all the great things that God has done for me. It probably won’t help defrost my toes, though I expect it to put a smile on my face. What it will do, is remind me of the great things that God has in store for all who love and follow Him, and that joy might help others to know that same hope for themselves.
