Christian Mens Breakfast Groups

Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles: (Luke 6:12 – 13)

I wonder what Jesus prayed about that night. Was He discerning which were the twelve He would appoint? I’m not convinced by that suggestion. I think it is more likely that He was praying for these men, mostly young men, maybe we’d consider them boys. Praying for their protection, praying that God would touch and anoint them, praying that they would be kept from temptation, especially from pride.

What stands out in this short passage, is the order of things. It is a simple order really, before Jesus acted, He prayed. Before He appointed the 12, He spent the night with the Father in prayer, all night. This was a significant moment in Jesus’ ministry, these are the men, empowered by the Holy Spirit, who would take the Gospel to the World, who would become the pillars of the Early Church, a movement, a body that continues to bless and reach the world today.

I expect Jesus already knew who the 12 were, the night before He gathered them. But still He prayed first. If Jesus followed this pattern, maybe it would be good for us to pay attention to it and do the same.

Do you have anything important ahead of you today? Maybe something that could be life changing for people – like sharing the Gospel. Then let your pattern be: Prayer – then Action.

Maybe you don’t think there is anything important ahead for your day? But how do we know what is ahead of us? Only God knows the encounters before us.

What mistakes we might avoid, what opportunities we might find, what fruitful lives we might live when we follow the pattern displayed by our Saviour: Prayer – then Action.
